This module will focus on understanding of the research paradigms and underpinning philosophy of science, toward enabling the expansion of knowledge, “research” in the nursing field and importance of knowledge and its experience, different types of research designs and critical evaluation of existing nursing related research literature.


In this module, ethical, social and psychological aspects of nursing care, developing appropriate attitudes towards patients and family members are emphasized. The topics include medical disorders of endocrine and metabolic system, neurological system, musculoskeletal system, haematological system, immune system, male reproductive system, disorders in eye, ear, nose and throat, poisoning and communicable diseases.


Students will have the opportunity to develop increasing skills in clinical judgment and their awareness of the way they utilize this knowledge into surgical nursing clinical practice. The systems covered in this module: nervous system, musculoskeletal system, endocrine system and male reproductive system, and surgical conditions of the ear, nose and throat, female breast. Also, the care of burns and its management and rehabilitation is also being discussed. 


This module will give an overview of the community care in Sri Lanka. Students will be attached to MOH areas to observe the activities in the antenatal clinics, child welfare, and home care. This introduces students to the concepts and principles of community health nursing practice. Also, it incorporates the basic concepts, principles and scope of epidemiology.
